OVERVIEW
Radio Check is an iPad-based communication trainer that helps student pilots and aircrew develop confidence and fluency in standard aviation radio procedures.
Using realistic air-traffic-control (ATC) interactions, it allows students to practise making and receiving calls across multiple channels, ATIS, Clearance, Ground, Tower, and Approach through an intuitive press-to-talk interface.
Students begin in Learn Mode, where required calls are shown on-screen and spoken aloud, guiding them through correct phraseology and structure. They then progress to Practice and Test Modes, making calls unprompted just as they would in the simulator or aircraft.
Each response is checked for accuracy and readback completeness, with immediate feedback provided to reinforce correct habits.
Developed from Defence pilot-training experience, Radio Check can be adapted to reflect local phraseology and procedural variations.
PURPOSE
Radio Check bridges the gap between classroom knowledge and operational radio proficiency.
It enables students to perform bulk repetition of realistic practice at their own pace, listening, transmitting, and receiving feedback, before applying those skills in the simulator or aircraft.
By combining repetition, realism, and validation, Radio Check builds the familiarity and confidence needed for effective cockpit communication.

Development and Growth
Radio Check was created to support ab-initio and advanced aviation training where radio proficiency is critical.
Its adaptable design allows local phraseology and procedures to be incorporated with targeted development and configuration for each training environment.
Planned extensions include:
- Full coverage of radio calls across basic, instrument, formation, navigation, and CTAF operations
- Enhanced scoring and analytics for instructor monitoring
- Optional adaptation for ATC-trainee use in the future
These developments will be introduced progressively in line with training priorities and available program support.
